It’s easy to get caught up in your everyday life, going from task to task, errand to errand. So easy, that we often lose sight of taking care of ourselves. You may think that you just don’t have the time for an hour long hot yoga class. But what if the answer is simpler than that? By adding just a few elements to your morning and nighttime rituals, you can create lasting wellness that brings energy, stress relief, and balance to your life.
- Drink Water/Hydrate
Instead of running to the coffee pot when you wake up, start your day with a glass of water and notice the genuine boost of energy that doesn’t come with the side effects of the jitters or a crash. It may seem like a hard feat to drink sixty-four ounces of water a day, but it becomes much easier if every day begins with sixteen ounces. You will not only enjoy the benefits of stable energy, but also mental clarity.
Stretching is another caffeine-free remedy to begin your day with some energy. By stretching in the morning, you release the tension in your muscles, increasing the blood flow to your body and your brain. These few moments in your morning will help stimulate your body and your mind, helping to prepare you for the day and to let go of anything that has followed you from yesterday.
If you’ve gone to a yoga class, chances are you’ve heard them mention this buzzword. But what if there is actually something to it? In order to combat feeling like we’re just falling through our day, start everyday with an intention or a goal. What do you want to accomplish today? How do you want to feel? By doing this, it opens a door of periodically checking in with ourselves to make sure we are truly addressing our physical and mental needs.
- Meditate/Breathing Exercise
There is a reason that meditation apps are one of the biggest wellness trends of 2017! By meditating before you sleep, you help your body release mental and physical tension. Use these few minutes everyday to let go of whatever emotions or worry that want to follow you into tomorrow, and set yourself up with a clean slate.
We’re mentioning this twice because your muscles play a critical role in your mental health. Feel happier, healthier, and have more energy by committing just a few minutes a day to your body. Stretching in the evening is just as important as in the morning because throughout the day, our spine compresses, building knots and putting pressure on our nerves. Release the tension from your day to allow your body to get the deepest rest it can during the night.
Making a spa day a regular part of your life can be expensive and time consuming, so why not bring the spa to you? Take a bath with one to two tablespoons of olive oil and a few drops of essential oil - some of our favorites are lavender and peppermint. By taking a hot bath, your body temperature will slightly cool, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep.
- Prepare For the Next Day
Why put it off until tomorrow if you can do it today? We all know the feeling of going to sleep and dreading the list of errands we have to do tomorrow. Take some stress off yourself by lightly preparing for your day tomorrow. This can be as simple as putting away your laundry, wiping down your kitchen counters, planning your outfit, or as big as prepping all of your meals for the week.
- Remove Makeup
For some, this step may seem like an unimportant way to end your day, but taking the time to literally wipe away your day will help you reset for tomorrow. It’s difficult to wake up ready to take on your day when you still have part of yesterday on you. TIP: In order to avoid stripping your face of vital oils, use coconut oil to remove your makeup! Take a quarter sized amount into your hands and rub it together in order to melt it, then rub it in a circular motion on your face and eyes, next rinse with warm water and a towel. You will notice the amazing difference in the hydration and smoothness of your skin immediately.
If adding all of these rituals into your routine is making you feel like you should transform into Gwenyth Paltrow, don’t worry - start slow! Start by choosing one or two of these rituals, and when they become a part of your routine with ease, then start to add more. True wellness does not come overnight, real change takes time, but it also brings real happiness.
